VEHICLE MAINTENANCE LABORER

Job Description:


  • The Vehicle Maintenance Laborer position will be responsible for performing a variety of janitorial duties in maintaining vehicle maintenance shops, offices, revenue vehicles, and related equipment in a clean and orderly condition; performs related work as assigned.
  • Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: ·
  • Cleans revenue vehicles by removing trash, vacuuming carpets, floors and seats, scrubbing walls, doors and windows and spotting and shampooing carpeted and upholstered areas.·
  • Replaces worn seat covers as required;·
  • Drain and flush waste tanks.·
  • Conducts the movement of rail cars and train movements using hand and/or flag signals or radio, in accordance with railroad rules and regulations.·
  • Prepares required daily reports, reporting any abnormal conditions to a supervisor.·
  • Posts, adds and subtracts the amounts of commodities used.·
  • Following specified procedures steam cleans tools or parts.·
  • Cleans office areas and storage room by vacuuming floors, carpets and upholstery, shampooing carpets and upholstery, emptying trash cans, dusting and washing chairs, desks, files and other surfaces and washing walls and doors.·
  • Uses chemical cleaners, equipment and materials in accordance with regulatory agency guidelines and SMART safety procedures.·
  • In employee lunchroom areas, cleans sink, stove, refrigerator, and tables in addition to floor and wall areas. · Performs cleaning tasks.·
  • Maintains proper care and use of materials, equipment, machines and hand tools associated with the assigned job.·
  • Reports problems to appropriate supervisor.
  • · Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • · Performs yard set-up duties for pull out operations at the main and remote storage locations; replenishes sand.
  • · Safely operates a variety of equipment including forklift, ground scrubber/sweeper, and upholstery cleaning equipment.
  • · Documents work performed.
  • · Performs heavy cleaning in shop areas, including service pits, truck bays and docks and floor areas, ensuring that debris and grease are removed.
  • · Cleans and disinfects restroom surfaces and fixtures using detergents and chemicals; restocks restrooms with service supplies such as soap and paper goods.
  • · Assembles necessary cleaning equipment, materials, supplies, cleaning solutions and required protective gear.
  • · Replaces accessories such as light bulbs, mirrors, and wiper.
  • · Checks quantity of and dispenses fuel and water to a variety of automotive and maintenance and service equipment.
  • · Moves maintenance vehicles around the yard to provide fueling, and related servicing to DMUs and locomotives.
  • · Performs daily visual vehicle inspection, reporting defects; checks and replaces consumables and equipment as necessary.
  • · Inspects and cleans interior light fixtures as required.
  • · Cleans and disinfects restrooms and restocks restroom supplies on revenue vehicles;
  • · Sweeps, mops, steams, scrapes and washes the interior and exterior, , of Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) and locomotives as well as non-revenue service vehicles; hand wash front and back ends.

  • Requirements
  • Minimum Qualifications:·
  • One year of related work experience in a position performing janitorial and/or industrial cleaning duties or a position responsible for the cleaning, maintenance and/or servicing of a variety of vehicles.·
  • Possession of a valid California's drivers' license (or ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment).·
  • Satisfactory driving record as defined below:
  • No "at fault" in a fatal accident within the past 5 years;
  • No DUI's or Reckless Driving codes within the last 7 years on the current DMV printout.·
  • Proof of vaccination for COVID-19 required for employment. Exemptions for religious or medical reasons available.· Working cooperatively with others in a crew.· Using cleaning products and detergents correctly and safely.· Maintaining accurate basic logs and records of work performed.
  • Knowledge of:·
  • Safe working practices, including techniques for safely lifting and moving heavy objects. ·
  • FRA, DOT and OSHA Safety regulations desirable.
  • Ability to:·
  • Learn and apply FRA 218 Blue Signal Protection Rules.·
  • Make logical decisions and sound judgments using common sense;·
  • Work in a team environment fully supporting the goals and objectives of the maintenance and rail operations;·
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions;·
  • Understand and follow guidelines including Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for the safe handling of toxic and/or caustic chemicals and other hazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens ;·
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner;·
  • Understand, read and communicate (both orally and in writing) in Standard English.
  • · Work irregular work hours, swing and graveyard shifts, holidays and weekends;
  • · Operate District vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner;
  • · Effectively communicate using portable hand held radios;
  • · Create and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of work duties and responsibilities;
  • · Perform the physical requirements of the job;
  • · Learn and apply District policies and procedures;
  • · Learn and follow established safety practices;
  • · General first aid and shop safety practices.
  • · Basic cleaning chemicals, their interactions, danger signs and safe disposal methods.
  • · Basic cleaning techniques and equipment.

  • · Using hand tools and power equipment to vacuum, scrub, strip, wax, buff, shampoo and otherwise clean varied surfaces and fixtures.
  • · Basic computer usage.
  • Skill in:
  • · Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment medical exam that uses the standards of the California Commercial Driver's License.
  • o No leaving the scene of an accident within the past 3 years;
  • o No more than two moving violations and/or "at fault" accidents within the last 3 years;
  • · Possession of a Forklift Operator Certification or ability to obtain one within the first ninety (90) days of employment.
  • Other Qualifications:
  • · Must possess a high school diploma, GED or recognized equivalent.

  • There is a 9-month probationary period following appointment to this position. ·
  • A thorough background check will be required including, but not limited to: current and past employers, personal contacts, education verification.
  • A credit report will be required for positions covered under Labor Code 1024.5. ·
  • A pre-employment physical, including a urinalysis drug test, will be required.·
  • Proof of vaccination for COVID-19 required for employment. Exemptions for religious or medical reasons available.·
